Message from Tournament Director, Professor Shah Franco:

Welcome to the Grandmaster Barreto Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open.

I am truly honoured to be involved in the launch of the Grandmaster Barreto BJJ Open in Toronto. And what better location to showcase this event that at Mixed Martial Arts Expo IV, June 2009.

The fact that the Brazilian Masters chose Toronto as the location to launch this prestigious tournament is testament to the fact that Canada has an outstanding network of BJJ practitioners.  It also clearly demonstrates a tremendous amount of support and respect for Canada's thriving Jiu Jitsu community -- a point of which we can all be proud.

In addition to individual division champions in the Adult and Youth categories, the Grandmaster Barreto Cup will be awarded to the school with the most points. This does not necessarily equate to the school with the most number of wins but rather the school that demonstrates the most talent and participation overall. Importantly, regardless of lineage, regardless of whether you train in BJJ specifically, we invite all Jiu Jitsu and grappling practitioners to participate in this Gi-only event.

This tournament also represents the first time that a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Red Belt has visited Canada. And while here, 9th Degree Red Belt Grandmaster Barreto and 7th Degree Black Belt Master Behring will deliver a Referee Clinic. As part of this unique clinic held on Saturday, June 6, participants will also referee the tournament on Sunday, June 7. Upon a successful assessment by the Masters, referees will receive their Official Certificates of Completion from Grandmaster Barreto personally - a very unique opportunity.

The Grandmaster Barreto Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open marks a significant milestone for the our Jiu Jitsu community and the Masters envision this as an annual Canadian event open to international competitors.

On behalf of Grandmaster Barreto and Master Behring we sincerely welcome everyone's participation. Please join us in making the Grandmaster Barreto International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open a world-class tournament that will be talked about for some time to come.
